Headshots are generally the first impression a client has of who you are. They'll see it on your website, your business card, or even a billboard. You'll want your headshot to scream who you are as a person and a business. Wherever you plan to use your headshot, Dee and Kris are here to help you create images that speak true to who you are and that will create a lasting first impression.
You'll want to wear something that is true to who you are but at the same time, you want to look professional. Consider your line of business when it comes to choosing what to wear, what would you wear at your highest level of professionalism? A lawyer will probably wear a suit and tie while a hairstylist might wear clean cut dark jeans. If you usually wear a uniform, like a doctors coat or polo with a logo, you will probably want to be photographed in both a casual outfit and your uniform.
If your large team is not planning to wear black or a matching uniform, we recommend staying within the same color family. For example, stay with all jeweled tones or all pastels. If one people is wearing lime green amongst a group of pastels, visually your eye will be distracted by the shirt, not your expressions and connection.
Accessories are fun and encouraged! However, to much may distract from the main subject... YOU! Hats, sunglasses, shawls and beads can work as fun props for pictures, but if we ask to take them off for a few shots it's only because we want a variety of looks and styles.
Makeup for headshots should be kept neutral, you want to present yourself in a way that shows off your daily appearance. If you don't normally wear makeup we don't recommend going wild and crazy by trying new things, but if you usually do full glam... glam it up, girl! For headshots, it's important to make sure your foundation matches your skin tone so your face matches your neck and to make sure it's fully blended so you don't look blotchy. Even if you don't have oily skin we recommend a matting powder to avoid any shininess on camera. Most of our in-studio headshots will be shot with our state of the art lighting set up, but with any type of lights, it can cause unwanted highlights on your face. Use a translucent matte powder on your t-zone, bridge of your nose, and your chin. When it comes to your lips, we recommend a gently tinted gloss to make your lips appear fuller.
For your hair, we recommend using your favorite products to reduce frizz. Since in-studio headshots are shot on a flat background, small baby hairs and frizziness can be emphasized is ways you don't want. It's best to reduce frizz as much as possible before having your headshots done. While the matte look is ideal for your face, shine is what you want to strive for in your hair. Too much hair spray and a matte look to your hair can make your look lifeless. Headshots are the time to shine!
Your headshot is one image that will represent you and your business so if you want to look your best, so some women choose to put their look into the hands of a professional. There are tons of makeup artists who specialize in headshots and makeup meant for the camera. If you'd like any recommendations, please just let us know!
We love a fun pattern, but be careful when dressing a whole team with busy patterns. We recommend team members wear solid colors, while the owner or prominent members wear a pattern or pop of color.
Undergarments can be your best friend or worst enemy. Make sure they fit properly and do not show through your outfit. If bra straps are an issue, consider wearing nude color straps or even a strapless bra to avoid them all together.
We all love a nice striped shirt and have a favorite graphic tee, but for your headshots we want to focus to be all about you. Avoid anything that can be to distracting such as graphics (unless it pertains to your business), horizontal stripes that can make you appear wider on camera, and full outfits of bright colors. Keep your outfit simple with pops of additional colors or textures in a scarf, necklace, or tie.
The best piece of advise we can give you for choosing an outfit is to compliment your website. Most people will have their headshots as a dominant image on their website. Start with a dark neutral color for the base of your outfit, your suit, dress, or blazer. Then think about the colors on your website, bring in the secondary colors into your outfit in order to tie in your headshot with the rest of your page.
The most important grooming for men is going to be your beard and hair. Most of our headshots are done in the morning, so you probably won't need to worry about an afternoon shadow. But take into consideration the timing of your shoot, and shave with enough time to avoid growth but also to allow to razor burn or nicks to heal before your shoot.
Many men want to get a cut the day before their headshot session, however, we recommend getting a cut a week before your shoot in order to allow for natural growth. Then use styling products to keep your hair in place. Same as for women, avoid overusing gels and hairspray to keep your hair looking shiny and fresh.
We know that men don't generally think about wearing makeup, but shiny skin can be an unwanted nuisance. We recommend men apply a light coverage translucent matifying powder to reduce any shininess. (Don't worry, we won't tell anyone)
This is a very common question we get for headshots, glasses or no glasses? This is a relatively simple question, if you usually wear glasses for corrective lenses you will definitely want to wear them! What about the glare? We will try our best to avoid glare, but unless your glasses have an anti-glare coating, we cannot guarantee your glasses won't cause unwanted glare. If you only wear reading glasses or glasses as part of your fashion look, we don't usually recommend wearing them. You are always welcome to bring them for a few alternative pictures, totally up to you!
